Asharam Choudhary, a ragpicker’s son from Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district who cracked the AIIMS examination in his first attempt to secure admission in AIIMS-Jodhpur, has received a letter of encouragement from Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The 20-year-old medical aspirant is being hailed for his achievement for overcoming all odds to clear the tough medical entrance examination.

In his letter to Asharam, Rahul Gandhi lauded his sheer determination and grit to overcome challenges and securing a seat in one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the country. The Congress chief said that Asharam reminded him of Mahatma Gandhi who had said “Strength does not come from physical activity. It comes from the indomitable will.”

I am aware that despite all the challenges you were able to secure good rank, the Congress leader said in his letter.

"It gives me immense pleasure to note how your village doctors and parents inspired you in your journey and contribution of Dakshana Foundation to support you financially. I hope one day you will also be in a position to inspire other young children to take the medical profession and serve the people of India," Mr Gandhi added in his letter.

Asharam, a resident of Vijayaganj Mandi village in MP's Dewas district, completed his initial days of education in a government school in his village and later got admission into Navodya Vidyalaya.

He prepared for the AIIMS exam while studying for his class +2 exams. Asharam scored 707, All India rank and 141 rank in the OBC category. Asharam even secured  2,763 All India rank in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET)

Proud of his son's achievement, his father Ranjit says he feels rich even without wealth, "I make a living by collecting and selling junk. We do not even have a house, but our wealth is my son, who has done us proud by getting selected to a prestigious medical college," he said.

Meanwhile, help has started pouring for Asharam. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has assured him that the state government will take care of his education from now on. “CM saheb congratulated me over the phone and said he will issue directives to help me with the studies,” Asharam said.
