Sepoy Vrahma Pal Singh will be awarded the Kirti Chakra, (posthumous), the second highest gallantry award in peace time for his valour in an operation where three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists including Masood Azhar's nephew were gunned down.

Among the gallantry winners announced on the eve of Independence Day, was Major Aditya Kumar, who triggered a controversy after his unit fired on a stone-pelting mob in South Kashmir's Shopian in January leading to death of three persons. Kumar will be honoured with the Shaurya Chakra.

While Singh is the lone winner of the Kirti Chakra, there are 20 from the armed forces who have been honoured with the Shaurya Chakra — the third highest peace-time gallantry award.

In all, 131 brave soldiers from army, air force paramilitary forces will be getting the gallantry awards.

Singh was part of an operation in November 2017 in Algar village, Jammu and Kashmir. There had been an input of three terrorists being present in the area.

Sepoy Vrahma Pal Singh was deployed in the inner cordon as he came under heavy fire from three different directions.

"He sustained bullet injuries on his chest and legs. Despite being grievously wounded and numerically overwhelmed by terrorists, Sepoy Vrahma Pal Singh continued dominating and engaging the terrorists, which led to the neutralisation of one terrorist and injuring of another," the citation conferring the honour on him states.

Rifleman Aurangzeb, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir and was brutally killed by terrorists in Pulwama in June when he was on his way home for Eid was also part of this operation and fought alongside Singh. He will be conferred with the Shurya Chakra.
