HONOURING THE BRAVE: J&K takes away chunk of awards, Aurangzeb gets Shaurya Chakra

Forces deployed in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) got the maximum chunk of gallantry awards this time. Rifleman Aurangzeb of 44 Rashtriya Riffles was awarded the Sharuya Chakra.

Major Aditya Kumar of 10 Garhwal regiment, who was named in the police FIR after three people were for killed in Ganawpora village of Shopian district in January this year, has also been awarded the Shaurya Chakra.

The five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, who foiled two major suicide attacks in Kashmir's Bandipora and Pulwama districts last year, have been awarded Shaurya Chakra this Independence Day.

Their names are among the 942 central and state police personnel whom the government has selected for 'Police Medals' on the 72nd Independence Day on Wednesday. Of the total medal winners, 117 personnel have been selected for the Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), 88 for President's Police Medal for Distinguished Services (PPM) and 675 for Police Medal for Meritorious Services, the Union Home Ministry announced on Tuesday, adding that the list of awardees was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind.

The CRPF has bagged five Shaurya Chakras two PPMGs and 52 Police Medals for gallantry. Forty seven personnel from J&K police too have won the honours. These include 37 medals for gallantry, one for distinguished service and nine for meritorious service.

Three Kashmiri soldiers, who laid down their lives in the line of duty were honoured with gallantry awards. Rifleman Aurangzeb of 44 Rashtriya Riffles was awarded the Sharuya Chakra, while two CRPF soldiers – Head Constable Mohammad Tufail and Constable Sharief- ud-din Ganaie of 185th battalion – were awarded President Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG). On June 14, terrorists had abducted and killed 24-year-old Rifleman Aurangzeb in Pulwama district. Rifleman Aurangzeb was en route home in Poonch to celebrate Eid with his family when he was abducted and killed.

Head Constable Tufail of Rajouri and Constable Ganaie of Budgam had laid down their lives while fighting terrorists who stormed a CRPF training facility at Lethpora in south Kashmir district of Pulwama on December 31. Five soldiers including an officer were killed and three others injured in the attack.

Head Constable AS Krishna, Constable K Dinesh Raja and Constable Prafulla Kumar have been awarded Shaurya Chakra for foiling an early morning fidayeen attack on June 5, 2017 at the Industrial Area (training ground) in Sumbal, Bandipora district. The jawans eliminated all four terrorists after a fierce gunbattle which went on for 45 minutes. In another incident, Kuldeep Singh Chahar (deputy commandant) and slain head constable – Dhanwade Ravindra Baban were instrumental in foiling a similar suicide attack at the district police line in Pulwama on August 26, 2017.

The BSF, which guards India's border with Pakistan and Bangladesh, has received 61 medals for gallantry, distinguished and meritorious services.

Among the CISF officers, 29 officers and jawans have been decorated with President's police medal for their meritorious and distinguished services. The awardees include DIG JS Negi and inspector S Muthusamy. Fourteen officials from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police have also been decorated with the medals for meritorious and distinguished service including deputy commandant and senior administrative officer Devinder Pal and commandant of the 51st battalion MS Guleria.
