Home Minister Rajnath Singh's relative was reportedly shot dead in a district village in Varanasi, police said.  According to reports, Arvind Singh was returning home late Tuesday after dropping his wife at the airport when three people on motorcycles intercepted him at Makhsudanpatti in Phoolpur.

Singh, a petrol pump owner, and the bikers had an altercation after which they shot him in the neck. The assailants fled the scene immediately. An alarm was raised by the women who were harvesting crop in a neighbouring field. Eyewitnesses say that one of the assailants had a discussion with Singh in a car for few minutes and then shot him at point blank range.

Superintendent of Police (rural) AK Pandey said that a .32 cartridge empty shell has been recovered from the crime scene. He further added that that no arrests have been made yet.

Commenting on the case, BJP's Uttar Pradesh state unit spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said, "There is no policing in the state and every day scores of people are being killed in the state."
