Jammu and Kashmir police has blown the lid off a Hizbul Mujahideen terror module and arrested two overground workers (OGW) including a serving Border Security Force (BSF) soldier in the border district of Kupwara.

The module was busted six days after Special Police Officer (SPO) Adil Bashir Sheikh deserted the police force and decamped with eight weapons including seven AK 47 riffles and personal pistol from the official residence of the PDP MLA from Wachi constituency Aijaz Ahmad Mir.

Police said Kupwara police detained two persons Shakir Ahmad Wani and Ghulam Mustafa Sheikh, both residents of Tekipora, Lolab for questioning after receiving specific input.

"The module was engaged in providing logistics support to terrorists apart from luring more youth into the path of terrorism," said a police spokesperson.

Shakir, according to police, is a serving BSF soldier posted in Mizoram. He had come on a 55-day-long marriage leave and acted as an overground worker of Hizbul.

"We are ascertaining his (BSF man) role in the module. He has also been detained. This OGW module was involved in providing logistics, weapons, recruitment and training," Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, Kupwara SSP, said.
Inspector General of the BSF, Kashmir Frontier, Abhinav Kumar said police has contacted them and they are cooperating with the investigation.

"This gentleman was posted with BSF in Mizoram and he had come on leave. He is not under my administrative control and we do not know too much about him except his current posting. But local police has contacted us and we are cooperating with the investigation. Whatever assistance is required from our side will be provided", Kumar told DNA.

Police is trying to verify the antecedents of Shakir since he was posted in Mizoram. Sources said so far police has not found any record of criminal past of the BSF soldier.

"We are trying to find out who he was in touch with, who recruited him as OGW and what prompted him to become the militant conduit. These questions need to be answered. There are also some missing links which need to be unearthed so that the case is cracked and entire conspiracy is unravelled," said a police officer.
