Hit by speeding bike, traffic cop succumbs to injuries

A constable attached to Matunga traffic division, who was knocked down by a speeding biker on January 2, succumbed to his injuries at Sion hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday. The offender will now face trial under the serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

According to Matunga police, Nitin Parab (52) was on duty and was crossing the road at Matunga's Char Rasta area on the fateful night, when a speeding biker knocked him down. Parab sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sion hospital where he was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU).

"The accused Vinod Kadlag lives in Antop Hill and was speeding towards Sion. He could not control his bike and dashed against Parab," said BM Kakad, senior police inspector from Matunga police station adding that rumours on Parab not getting immediate medical attention are not true. "The constable's family has not made any such allegation," he said.

The doctors at Sion hospital refuted the charges about negligence on the part of the hospital. "In fact, Parab was given extra attention as he was an on-duty constable. He was resuscitated many times. He had severe internal bleeding, very unstable blood pressure, including facial and base skull major trauma. He was in shock since he was admitted here," said Dr Suleman Merchant, dean, LTMG Sion hospital.
