The son of two senior Maharashtra bureaucrats died after falling from the terrace of a south Mumbai high-rise on Tuesday morning. Senior police officers have ruled out foul play, and are probing whether 18-year-old Manmath Mhaiskar fell accidentally or committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of Dariya Mahal building in Nepean Sea road.

Manmath's father, Milind, is vice president and CEO of MHADA; his mother Manisha is Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department. They live at Bel-Heaven building at Marine Lines.

Police say two of Manmath's friends live in Dariya Mahal, and all three had planned to meet at Priyadarshini Park on Tuesday. However, the plan changed and they decided to meet at Dariya Mahal.

The friends were unaware that Manmath had reached the building. "One of the friends called Manisha as Manmath was not answering calls. Manisha told him that Manmath had left home half-an-hour ago to meet him. The friend then went to PDP park thinking Manmath may be waiting for him there, but failed to find him and returned home," says a police source. Police found Manmath's bag near the water tank on the terrace.

Manmath was rushed to JJ hospital at around 9:15 am with the help of Malabar Hill police, where he was declared dead before admission.

"We came to know his identity from the mobile phone and identity card he was carrying. We have registered a case of accidental death. Only after our investigations are over will we be able to say whether it is a case of suicide or accidental fall," says Dnyaneshwar Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II).
