A high alert has been sounded after a cop posted to guard the residence of a senior PDP minister Syed Altaf Bukhari decamped with two automatic rifles at Sheikh Bagh in the heart of Srinagar city.

Bukhari is the treasurer of People's Democratic Party (PDP) and holds the portfolio of roads and buildings department in Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government in Jammu and Kashmir.

Police said Constable Nisar Ahmad Mir of Karimabad in south Kashmir's Pulwama, district was deployed at Bukhari's residence for guard duty for some time now.

However, on Friday night, Mir deserted his post and escaped from the spot. After a thorough search, police found that Mir had decamped with two AK assault rifles along with some ammunition.

"Nisar Ahmad Mir is missing from his place of posting at Sheikh Bagh, Srinagar along with some arms and ammunition since yesterday. Police has taken cognizance and started investigation", a police spokesman said.

Soon after the incident, police went into a tizzy and launched a massive search operation to nab the cop. Police also registered a case and investigation has been put on fast track mode to solve the mysterious disappearance.

Police later sounded a high alert across the valley to locate the cop and prevent any untoward incident from unfolding. A high level meeting was also held in which the officers discussed the strategy to deal with the situation.

This is the first such incident in the valley since the PDP-BJP coalition government took over the reins of power on March 1.
