The United Nations on Wednesday awarded its highest ‘green’ honour to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Known as ‘Champions of the Earth Award’, the honour signifies commendable work done by an individual to save our planet.

But why exactly did UN honour PM Modi? The answer is the International Solar Alliance. So do you know everything about the ISA? Check out the ultimate guide about the ISA, which is helping nations world over to reduce dependability of fossil fuel.

1: It was on November 30, 2015, when PM Modi along with then French President Francois Hollande launched the International Solar Alliance at the UN Climate Change Conference, Paris.

2: With vision of roping in as many countries as possible,m the ISA is specifically looking for nations located between Tropics of Capricorn and cancer. As of now, only 56 nations have become signatories of the alliance. They are Australia, Bangladesh, Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Chad, Chile, Comoros, Costa Rica, Cote d'Ivoire, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominican, Republic, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, Gambia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, India, Kiribati, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nauru, Niger, Nigeria, Peru, Rwanda, Sao Tome, Senegal, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Tuvalu, UAE, Uganda, Vanuatu, Venezuela and Yemen.

3: As India is the founding member of the ISA, its secretariat will be based out of New Delhi. During the launch ceremony, PM Modi had said that ‘India will produce 175 GW electricity from renewable sources by 2022 and 100 GW will be from solar energy.’

4: At a time when the world is witnessing freak weather phenomenon, which the experts claim are the warning signs of the climate change, initiative such as the International Solar Alliance will pave way for green energy. Thus, it will not only reduce dependability on the fossil fuel, but also work as a catalyst for cleaner and greener environment.
