Heavy rainfall triggers floods in parts of MP, UP, Bihar; NDRF, Army deployed for relief work

The rise of river Ganga above the danger level has led to flooding in several states.

Madhya Pradesh

4,215 people were rescued from Satna and 1,550 rescued from Rewa in Madhya Pradesh after heavy rainfall caused a flood-like situation in several parts of the state on Saturday.

An army column was deployed in Rewa along with a task force for flood relief operations in the state.

ANI reported that 15 people died due to incidents arising after heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh in the past 24 hours. 

One person died in the collapse of a three-storey building in Maihar. Seven others died after a house collapsed in Sagar's Rahatgarh area. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced Rs.4 lakh as ex-gratia for the kin of the victims.

Earlier in the day, the CM had called an emergency meeting to review the situation in the state. 

Incessant rains have badly affected normal life in Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions. Major rivers and streams including Son, Ken and Tamas are in spate in the regions. Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Chattarpur, Panna, Katni, Damoh and some other districts are facing flood like situation. Excessive water is being released from most of the dams in these areas.

The army is assisting in relief and rescue operations in rural areas of Rewa district where several villages have been inundated.

The road connectivity has been badly disturbed in several districts as major rivers and streams are overflowing.

The Met Department has predicted heavy showers in the next 24 hours at several places in northern and western Madhya Pradesh. 

Uttar Pradesh

In UP, there was flood-like situation in Varanasi as the water level of Ganga rose the above the danger level. 

In Allahabad, several areas flooded as water enters residential areas of the region.

Several districts are reeling under flood as incessant rain has wreaked havoc, crippling normal life and obstructing road transportation. 

Here, River Mandakini has flooded dozens of villages of Chitrakoot district where flood has also washed away roads at several places between Allahabad and Chitrakoot for the last four days. The people are compelled to use boats in the Chitrakoot town streets which remained filled with flood water. 

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are continuously engaged in the relief and rescue work. 

On the other hand, the flood threat is also looming large in Mirzapur, Ghazipur, Ballia and other districts due to continuous rise of river Ganga which has swelled to the dangerous levels at many places. The administration evacuated villagers in view of imminent flood threat.

Bihar

River Ganga wreaked havoc in Patna as well with water entering residential areas. Near Sonpur, Saran, three children drown in the river.

The districts of Bihar situated on the banks of the Ganga were put on alert as the Central Water Commission warned Ganga basin districts that it may witness a rise in water level for next one to five days.

Due to the increase in the water level of the Ganga, waters have reportedly entered into the riverine areas of the districts like Buxar, Bhojpur, Munger, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur and Samastipur, a Disaster Management Department statement said.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, already pre-positioned in Patna, Vaishali and Gopalganj, have been put on alert while State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been put on alert in Patna and Bhagalpur.

Chattisgarh 

Heavy rains over last two days lashed northern parts Chhattisgarh affecting communication and causing heavy damage to properties. The northern Sarguja division of Chhattisgarh had witnessed insufficient rains till the last week but now it is facing a flood like situation due to heavy downpour from the last two days. 

The road communication with remote villages of Ambikapur, Jashpur, Surajpur and Belrampur has been affected. Over 150 animals also got drowned in the flood waters and over 60 houses have been destroyed in this region. 

The Met department has forecasted heavy rains to continue over the next two days as well.
