Heavy rain spell lash capital, triggers water-logging and traffic snarls

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) of Noida and Gurugram woke up to a bleak morning and one of the heaviest spell of monsoon rainfall this season that stalled traffic across the city and forced pedestrians to wade through knee-high water at several places. Along with Delhi-NCR, Haryana, parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh too received heavy spells of rainfall. A combination of weather conditions resulted in the heavy spell of rain on Wednesday morning, weathermen said.

Besides, the axis of monsoon trough prevailed south of Delhi in Uttar Pradesh. All these conditions lead were conducive for formation of rain bearing clouds. According to the regional meteorological centre, Delhi, the Safdarjung observatory recorded the maximum rainfall at 63.1mm between 8.30am and 5.30 pm on Thursday.

Lodhi Road and Palam observatory recorded 58.4mm and 55.6 mm respectively.

"There was a moderate to heavy rainfall all across Delhi-NCR and several parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The conditions prevailing will persist for a day more and then they are likely to affect the foothills of Himalayas," BP Yadav, director, National Weather Forecasting Centre, Delhi.

Weathermen said that since there is no low-pressure area prevailing, the rainfall will decrease in Delhi-NCR. "These conditions will soon abate soon. Uttarakhand, parts of Uttar Pradesh, west Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Odisha and Telangana are likely to receive heavy rains," said a weather official. According to private weather forecaster Skymet, between June 1 and August 30, the capital has received 451mm rainfall against the normal average rainfall of 522.8mm.
