Heavy to very high rainfall across the three states of Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra triggered flash floods, killing at least 25 people and affecting 4.55 lakh people over the last three days.

The Bay of Bengal branch of southwest monsoon has witnessed a surge, resulting in a low pressure area over Madhya Pradesh, Assam and parts of northern and central Maharashtra, said Met department sources. While Nashik district in Maharashtra saw near-uninterrupted rainfall between Saturday and Monday morning, low-lying regions such as Trimbakeshwar recorded 150mm rainfall on Sunday, resulting in flooding of Godavari river.

According to the state disaster management authority, the rains impacted Madhya Pradesh the most as 22 persons died and 3 lakh people were affected across Satna, Hoshangabad, Sagar, Damoh, Mandla. Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Rewa and Bhopal. The state has set up 68 camps for the displaced and the situation is improving with flood water receding and rainfall set to decrease in the coming days. The Met department said that nearly 70% of the state had received excess rainfall in the last few days.

In Assam, the Brahmaputra was flowing above danger level at Nematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri and at Dhansari in Golaghat. Officials from the state's disaster management authority said that nearly 1.23 lakh people were affected across Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Barpeta, Biswanath and Sivsagar districts and two persons drowned in strong river currents. "There have been two-three waves of floods and heavy rainfall still prevails in some districts," said Kirpal Jyoti Majumdar, project officer at the Assam Disaster Management Authority. Across 190 villages, 7,606 hectares of standing crop were affected with Golaghat witnessing damage in 5,003 hectares.

In Nashik, uninterrupted rainfall over the weekend battered the city and neighbouring regions. The Godavari river was gushing with full force and destroyed vehicles, shops, establishments and houses located near its banks, especially near the Ram Kund which hosts the Simhasta Kumbh Mela. More than 35 people were rescued during rescue operations while one casualty was recorded. Nilesh Naik, 23, a resident of Deolali reportedly drowned in Waldevi river where he had gone to swim.

According to the Met department, since Sunday night to Monday noon, Igatpuri recorded 215mm rain, Nashik city recorded 184.4mm rains and the catchment area of Trimbakeshwar received 208mm rainfall. Officials of the India Meteorological Department though said that the rainfall is set to abate across all three states in the coming days. "The low-pressure system that prevailed resulted in a lot of rainfall in a short span of time. This will continue till July 14-15 and then rainfall will decrease," said DS Pai, director, long-range forecasting centre, IMD, Pune.
