The death toll across Maharashtra due to the heat wave has already touched four health officials in the state said. The four deaths occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, according to officials.

District health authorities though are yet to confirm the exact cause of these deaths though preliminary reports have attributed it to heat. "There are four suspected deaths. The deaths are from Beed, Solapur, Aurangabad and Dhule each," said Dr Pradeep Awate, state surveillance officer, Maharashtra.

"We had issued an advisory to all the district health officials on March 14 itself about asking residents to avoid the hottest period of the days, the kind of clothes to wear and drinking enough water," Dr Awate added.

"Temperatures are now coming down, which is why we have not issued a heat wave warning. But the temperatures are likely to be around 40 degrees in the interiors of the state," said VK Rajeev, Director of Indian Meteorological Department - Mumbai.

Scientists watching the weather say that while there is a heat wave in Vidarbha, the rest of the state is witnessing temperatures that are in the average range for the season.

"The temperatures are high in Vidarbha at the moment. Nagpur, for example, is currently around 43 degree celsius but we are expecting it to fall down by Saturday by one or two degrees Celsius across the region. In the rest of the state they are fairly normal," said Dr AK Srivastava, a senior scientist at IMD in Pune.

In Mumbai doctors are seeing cases of heat exhaustion but not heat stroke. "Classic signs of a heat stroke are severe headaches, tiredness and muscle cramps due to loss of electrolytes in the body," said Dr Monica Goel, consultant physician, PD Hinduja Hospital. She recommended drinking lots of water and juices and staying away from beverages like tea/coffee as they lead to loss of water.

Signs of heat stroke
Severe headache
Tiredness
Lack of concentration
Muscle cramps
Fever

Doc's tip: Stay away from roadside juices as the season also witnesses a rise in several types of respiratory tract infections.
