Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar was on Saturday quoted out of context and misrepresented by some opposition leaders after he spoke at an event on ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana’.

The CM was talking about the increased sex ratio of Haryana, which is the example of successful implementation of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

“Earlier, there were 1,000 males to 850 females. But due to our efforts, the number of girls born per 1,000 boys has increased to 933. This is a great change, and everyone would agree to it,” the CM said.

He said, “Our minister OP Dhankhar used to say that he will bring ‘bahu’ (daughter-in-law) from Bihar. Nowadays people are saying that path to Kashmir has been cleared. Now we will bring girls from Kashmir.”

Though in the very next sentence, Khattar qualified it as a joke as he added, “Jokes apart, but only if we are able to maintain the ratio, there’ll be a balance in the society”, some of the opposition leaders were quick to find fault with an unoffending remark.

Tagging a news agency report, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted, “Will the BJP sack its Haryana CM? This statement is so offensive that it deserves a punishment no less.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi too took to Twitter to lambast Khattar. “Haryana CM, Khattar’s comment on Kashmiri women is despicable and shows what years of RSS training does to the mind of a weak, insecure and pathetic man. Women are not assets to be owned by men.”

While the social media reacted angrily against Khattar, many came to defend him claiming that he himself referred it as a joke and the remark in no manner can be construed as derogatory.

Khattar too reacted sharply to Rahul Gandhi and tagging his tweet, tweeted, “Weak, insecure and pathetic are adjectives people use for the President of the Congress Party. Manufacturing statements & subsequently destroying their own party does not work in the long term.”
