Hardline separatist leader Masrath Alam, who spearheaded the 2010 summer agitation in Kashmir, was today rearrested after he was released on bail by a local court here.

Alam was granted bail by Executive Magistrate Srinagar during a hearing of his preventive detention case, officials said. The separatist leader managed to give slip to a team of policemen who were waiting to rearrest him as he was wanted in some other case, the officials said. They said, however, Alam was picked up by police from his Habbakadal residence in Old City within hours of his release.

He was arrested in October 2010 at the end of a bloody summer agitation in Kashmir, which left over 120 youth dead in security forces action, and was detained under Public Safety Act (PSA).

Alam is chairman of Muslim League -- a constituent of hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
