Waking up to the sufferings of a woman, the Hapur gang-rape victim who tried to immolate herself after failing to get justice, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh police chief to take strict and immediate action against the accused.

The 24-year-old woman from Hapur town in Uttar Pradesh was hospitalised in a critical condition at AIIMS, with grievous 80 per cent burns. She was reportedly married in 2009 at the age of 14, and two years later, sold by her parents for Rs 10,000. While she was working as a domestic help, she was allegedly gang-raped by 16 different men between 2014 and 2018. When she failed to get a complaint registered with the Uttar Pradesh police, she set herself on fire last month.

Expressing concern over her plight and over the rise in crimes against women and police apathy, the NCW issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh, asking him to take strict and immediate action against the accused.

"Considering the gravity of the matter as per a telephonic conversation, it's requested that the matter be thoroughly investigated, and action taken against errant officials. A detailed action taken report should be sent to the commission at an early date," NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

Sharma also said she didn't get any satisfactory answers regarding the case, so issued a notice. "I didn't get any satisfactory answers, that's why I have sent a team to meet the lady, her relatives and the doctors. My first priority is to see if she is being treated well or not. According to Hapur SP, the victim first filed the complaint in 2010. So, our priority is to see what the complaint was, what action was taken. I want to know what situations were created due to which she burnt herself," she said.

Meanwhile, the Congress has attacked the Yogi Adityanath government over the incident. "It is a living crude reminder of the fact that the true slogan of the BJP is not 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', but 'Beti Darao Balatkari Bachao'," said Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill.
