Even as Bihar and West Bengal struggle to maintain peace after Ram Navami violence, communal clashes broke out in Rajasthan’s Jaitaran town during Hanuman Jayanti ‘shobha yatra’ on saturday.

Tension prevailed in the town that comes under Rajasthan’s Pali district. Stone-pelting was reported in some parts while as many as six vehicles were set ablaze during the violence. A couple of shops were also gutted.

A PTI report said that around dozen people including some policemen were also injured in the violence.

Prohibitory order under section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in the area to keep the situation under control, District Collector Sudhir Kumar Sharma said.

According to the police, the incident happened when the Hanuman Jayanti procession was passing through the main market of Jaitaran town.

Suddenly, some persons started pelting stones on the procession which disrupted it. This enraged the other side and they also started pelting stones," they said.

This escalated to violence and arson in the town and about half-a-dozen vehicles, including passenger buses, shops and a small mall, were set ablaze, they added.

Police swung into action soon and dispersed the stone-pelting mob by arresting some people from the two sides. Senior officials including IGP Hawa Singh Ghumaria and the District Collector Sharma are camping in the town.

"We have been talking to some senior persons from both the sides to douse the tension and ensure peace in the town," Sharma said, adding all efforts are being put in to restore law and order.

Bengal remains peaceful

Amid tight security, Hanuman Jayanti was celebrated across West Bengal today.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) took out colourful processions and organised Hanuman puja in various parts of the state. Senior party leaders and ministers were seen taking part in the celebrations.

However, the BJP and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) kept their Hanuman Jayanti celebrations a low-key affair with small-scale programmes at temples and mutts.

The saffron brigade had decided to keep the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations low-profile in view of widespread violence in various parts of the state over Ram Navami celebrations earlier this week.
