In a remarkable turn of events, Usha Gaikwad, Ravindra Gaikwad’s wife is now claiming that her slipper-wielding husband lost his cool because an Air India staffer ‘insulted’ PM Modi! She told Mumbai Mirror: "I had never imagined my husband would be hitting somebody like he did in Delhi. For the first time, his violent side has been seen and that was mostly because of the rude behaviour by the airline staffers. Never in my life had I seen anger get the better of him. I called up him up after the incident around midnight and he said the Air India staffers were rude to him even when they knew that he was an MP.”

She added: “My husband wanted to do was register a complaint against Air India's poor service. But, instead of taking down his complaint, they kept on arguing. Finally, when they used the name of our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) disrespectfully, he lost his cool and hit the staffer."

The claim is quite remarkable on several counts. Firstly, Gaikwad claimed that he had lost his cool after the officer said he would "complain to Modi" as he thrashed him after saying that he was from "Shiv Sena and not BJP".

He told PTI: "I first asked him to lower his voice as his blood pressure would shoot up. He then said he would complain to Modi. Then I slapped him. I hit him 25 times with my sandal. I am Shiv Sena MP, not of BJP, to tolerate abuses.” An unrepentant Gaikwad added that he went to watch Badrinath Ki Dulhania later in the day. He dared the police to arrest him, claiming 'Uddhav Saheb' will take care of it.

An unedited video of the incident shows that he almost threw the Air India officer off the plane’s tarmac, and had to be physically restrained from doing so as one lady admonished him, reminding him that he was an "elected official" and a "role model". Meanwhile, Usha Gaikwad's claims that her husband doesn’t lose his temper also does not pass muster since Gaikwad has quite a rap-sheet and was last in the news for trying to force feed a Muslim caterer during Ramzan. He has various criminal charges against him, which include voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servants from duty, criminal intimidation and rioting among others.

Here’s his complete list of charges according to My Neta:

Sena goes on the defensive

With the opposition parties taking on the Shiv Sena over Osmanabad MP Ravindra Gaikwad's unwarranted behaviour against an Air India staffer, party leader Manisha Kayande on Saturday said they do not subscribe to such attitude. She further said Gaikwad is expected to meet party chief Uddhav Thackeray. "As we have told earlier, our stand remains the same. The party has taken this issue seriously. We do have given harsh reactions. In this case, we do not subscribe to the behaviour of Gaikwad," Kayande said.

"We do not support this. The Shiv Sena has fought for the common man. We have demanded for enquiry,’ she added. After being barred by all the airlines, Gaikwad took a train to Mumbai on Friday. Air India and six private airlines banned the 56-year-old MP from flying as he refused to apologise for the incident that triggered nationwide outrage.

The MP from Osmanabad in Maharashtra had downplayed reports suggesting that Air India is considering banning him from boarding its flights. "I have the tickets, they can't blacklist me. I will board the Delhi-Pune Air India flight this evening. How can they not allow me?’" he said.

"I will not apologise. It was not my fault, it was his fault. He should apologise. First ask him to apologise then we will see," Gaikwad told the media.

Air India Duty Manager Sukumar, who was assaulted by Gaikwad, asserted that the elected representatives need to behave in a decent manner.

"I am not scared at all, either with Gaikwad or with the Shiv Sena. I have been serving public and have also faced many who get irritated on such issues. It's a common thing for me," he added.

Earlier, the Centre also took cognisance of the incident and assured a thorough probe into the matter.
