Lambasting the BJP for failing to take alleged scandals like the 2G spectrum scam to their logical end, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said they had joined the BJP-led government in Maharashtra to ensure that Sena leaders will get experience in running the government.

Thackeray was speaking to Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut in an interview published in the party mouthpiece Saamna on Tuesday. The Opposition - Congress and NCP - have long criticised the Shiv Sena for repeatedly slamming the BJP yet staying in power at the state and Centre.

“What did you do eventually? You had come to power by making allegations about this corruption,” Uddhav said, questioning the action in cases like the 2G spectrum scam. “What about the (action against) the corruption that happened then? Just allegations after allegations were made... even today you talk about corruption in the last 60 years. Then, why didn’t you prove graft in even one of these cases” asked Uddhav, adding that “if corruption has happened, prove it. Don’t just throw muck to defame someone and run away.”

He also took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had attacked NCP chief Sharad Pawar and his party for corruption during the 2014 assembly elections but had called him (Pawar) his guru later.

Uddhav said if the Shiv Sena had not joined the BJP in the Maharashtra government in 2014, they (BJP) would have used “any means possible” to break the Congress and NCP and come to power like in states like Tripura, where it divided the Congress and Trinamool Congress. “Instead, I let our people get experience of (the government’s) working,” he added. Uddhav also listed the telemedicine scheme, tabs for students and motorcycle ambulances as some achievements of the Shiv Sena while in the government.

On questions by Raut about the Shiv Sena walking off with six of the seven MNS corporators in the BMC, Uddhav, without naming his estranged cousin and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, said the outfit was formed by splitting the Sena. “Basically, what you had taken from me has returned to me,” he explained.
