Uber cabs banned in Delhi with immediate effect; government puts out list of licensed cab services

The Delhi Court on Monday sent Uber cab driver, an accused in a rape case, to three days police custody for interrogation and recovery of a mobile phone. Police custody was granted after accused Shiv Kumar Yadav refused to undergo 'Test Identification Parade'.  The Delhi Police also claimed that the driver was trying to flee to Nepal.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government banned with immediate effect all operations by private cab service Uber in the city following the incident by one of its cab driver, as well as provided the list of licensed private cab services operating in the Delhi/NCR region.

Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav, the 32-year-old driver and a native of Mathura who was living in rented premises in Delhi, was arrested on Sunday,

Yadav, who allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman in Delhi on Friday night, is a repeat offender and was also involved in a rape case in 2011 as well.

The Delhi Police will interrogate Uber's head of India operations today. Meanwhile, according to reports, Uber has shut its office in Gurgaon.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the incident was a blot on the society and that stern steps will be taken to check such crimes.

"I believe that there cannot be more unfortunate or shameful incident. We are saddened by incidents like these. Stern steps need to be taken," he told reporters. 

The Minister said that existing laws needed to be implemented more effectively and efforts should be made to bring about a perceptional change in the society.

"The cab in which the crime took place was owned by him and he was traced through his mobile number and has been handed over to the Delhi police. The car was recovered from the city late last night," said Singh.

Government puts out official list of licensed radio cab services in Delhi

"Easy Cab, Mega Cab, Meru Cab, Chanson Cab, Yo Cab and Air Cab are licensed with the Transport Department for operating radio taxis in the NCT of Delhi," a Transport Department notification said.

Stating that what happened over the weekend in New Delhi is horrific. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick in a statement said, "Our entire team's hearts go out to the victim of this despicable crime. We will do everything, I repeat, everything to help bring this perpetrator to justice and to support the victim and her family in her recovery." 

He further added, "We will work with the government to establish clear background checks currently absent in their commercial transportation licensing programs. We will also partner closely with the groups who are leading the way on women’s safety here in New Delhi and around the country and invest in technology advances to help make New Delhi a safer city for women."

Social activist condemns Delhi rape, salutes victim for fighting back

Social activist Kavita Srivastava on Monday condemned the incident of alleged rape with a 27-year-old woman by a cab driver and praised the victim for courageously fighting back. "I condemn this incident, how could such a thing happen again, we haven't recovered from what had happened in 2012 and now once again. Delhi cab rape case: AAP protests outside Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's residence

As a massive search operation was on in Mathura and other parts of Uttar Pradesh to nab the accused, Delhi Police on Saturday had announced a cash reward of Rs one lakh for his arrest. The police have also issued a notice to Uber, the US-based cab service provider, under section 161 CrPC to join investigation in the case. Read more

"We have issued them a notice to join investigation. There are norms to operate such cab service set by the Transport Department and we will see whether they were followed or not," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

The shocking incident, which took place days ahead of the second anniversary of the December 16 gangrape, brought back memories of the horrific crime as shock and anger erupted both online and offline.

According to the police, neither the driver was verified nor the cab had a GPS tracker.

The company has issued a statement, saying that it was providing all help to the police in the investigation.

"Our thoughts are with the victim of this terrible crime and we are working with the police as they investigate. We will assist them in any way we can. It is also our policy to immediately suspend a driver's account following allegations of a serious incident, which we have done.

"Safety is Uber's highest priority and in India, we work with licenced driver-partners to provide a safe transportation option, with layers of safeguards such as driver and vehicle information, and ETA-sharing to ensure there is accountability and traceability of all trips that occur on the Uber platform," said Evelyn Tay, an Uber spokeswoman.

The driver did not have a driving licence issued by the Delhi Transport Authority and the only link the service provider had with him was an Smartphone App which he exited after the incident, the police said.
