With three incidents of shooting reported in Delhi within 24 hours, in which 3 people were killed, the gunrunners in and around the national Capital have once again come into focus. In fact, this year alone, on an average three people were arrested daily, and more than 1,000 weapons were recovered from them. Of these, over 70 per cent were country-made pistols.

According to senior police officers, in almost every such gang bust, country-made weapons and sophisticated pistols are recovered in abundance, highlighting the trend of heavy inflow of these weapons into the Capital. After repeated raids and successful recoveries of huge arms caches this year, the Delhi Police also unveiled on many occasions the meagre cost at which these guns were being made available to puny gangs operating in the city.

According to the Delhi Police data, 1,090 weapons were recovered in Delhi this year till October 15. Of these, 762 were country-made pistols, while 303 were sophisticated pistols, including those that were foreign made and imported illegally. Further, 14 revolvers, seven guns, and four rifles were also recovered.

Commenting on the issue, Delhi Police PRO Madhur Varma said: "Such incidents have certainly brought gangs using illegal weapons under the police radar. Easy availability of these weapons is one of the biggest reasons behind the street crime menace. Usually, the supply comes from major gangs operating in western UP and Bihar. At small prices, these weapons are then sold to street criminals in Delhi-NCR. The Delhi Police have been executing operations and raids to target these major gangs."

He added: "On many occasions, we have been able to cut the veins of these big gangs running into the Capital, in order to curb the weapon supply to small gangs operating in Delhi. As many as 872 people have been arrested this year, so far."

During police investigation, it has also come to light that in many areas from where these illegal arms were transported, factories aided by naxal or maoist groups were located, and these supplied arms in collaboration with suppliers from Munger, Meerut, Nashik, and Khargone.
