Gulberg Society case: SIT lawyer recounts testimonies of two witnesses

The lawyer of the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team, the prosecuting agency in the Gulberg Society massacre case from the 2002 Gujarat riots, summed up testimonies of two witnesses on Wednesday. Final arguments in the case are underway at present.

Former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri and 68 others were killed at the society on February 28, 2002, in the aftermath of Godhra train burning incident. Special public prosecutor R C Kodekar narrated the depositions of Aslamkhan Anwarkhan Pathan and Mohammad Sharif Naseeruddin Shaikh before the judge P B Desai here on Wednesday.

Pathan, who lost five members of his family in the massacre, identified three of the accused and also corroborated versions of the key witnesses Imtiyaz Pathan and Saeedkhan Pathan, Kodekar pointed out. Pathan, who himself was also injured in the attack, narrated the sequence of events very clearly, he said. Shaikh, who lost ten people from his family including his wife and two daughters, also supported the versions of SIT's key witnesses, Kodekar said, adding that he had identified two of the accused.

The hearing will continue on December 26.
