External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who was nominated by the BJP as its candidate in Gujarat Rajya Sabha by-poll, has got 104 votes and is all set to win the election.

Voting for the by-polls to the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat was held at the Assembly complex in Gandhinagar from 9 am to 4 pm today. Counting was taken up after the end of voting.

While the BJP fielded External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and OBC leader Juglaji Thakor, the Congress had nominated Chandrika Chudasama and Gaurav Pandya.

However, in another setback for the Congress party, two of its MLAs Alpesh Thakor and Dhavalsinh Zala resigned from the Gujarat Assembly apparently after voting against the party candidates in the Rajya Sabha bypolls. Both the MLAs did cross-voting by voting for the BJP.

"I and Zala have resigned as Congress MLAs. We have submitted our resignation to the Assembly speaker," Thakor said after casting his vote.

Slamming the Congress party, Thakor said, "I have cast my vote for honest national leadership that wants to take the country to new heights. I cast vote as per my inner voice,"

The 43-year-old MLA from Radhanpur, who is a prominent OBC leader in Gujarat, said he was not happy in the Congress which he joined in 2017.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Paresh Dhanani of the Congress said apart from Thakor and Zala all the other 69 MLAs voted for the party candidates in the bypolls.

Speaking on cross-voting by two of its MLAs, Gujarat Congress said it has filed an appeal to Election Commission regarding cross-voting by Alpesh Thakor and Dhavalsinh Zala in Rajya Sabha by-polls, today."

"Today, our MLAs Dhavalsinh Zala and Alpesh Thakor voted to the candidates of BJP, in Rajya Sabha by-polls. After which our observer Shailesh Parmar took objection on this and instantly demanded to cancel their votes and  issued anti-defection law," Congress observer Jaysinh Parmar said.
