Whatever the reason —the grief and outrage over Delhi gang rape or the tight police bandobast in the city — the number of people on city roads on the New Year Eve was remarkably less as compared to the last few years.

Whatever the reason —the grief and outrage over Delhi gang rape or the tight police bandobast in the city — the number of people on city roads on the New Year Eve was remarkably less as compared to the last few years. The police personnel remained on their toes, with all the senior cops, including the commissioner of police out on patrolling till late in the night.

The intimidating presence of the sizeable force of police and paramilitary officials on almost every road of the city may have given the party revelers second thoughts on late night celebrations.

If the last night of the past few years is considered, Monday saw the least crowd on SG Highway and the areas surrounding it due to the police bandobast. The entire stretch was dotted with police teams of 10 to 15.

At 10 pm, the rural police raided a year-end party in the open at a farm house in Rancharda of Gandhinagar district and closed down the party. The revelers were told to leave the farm house sharp at 10 pm. Even the road side eateries on CG Road were closed down by 10 pm, forcing the people to leave the area. The number of people was less as compared to last year and the people even returning home before 11 pm.

The situation was no different at Prahladnagar garden. Sharp at 10 pm, the police closed the garden and forced the people to leave the spot. Even the nearby eateries were closed down.
