Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Pravin Togadia was found unconscious in Shahibaug area on Monday evening hours after he was reported "missing." The 62-year-old has been admitted to Chandramani Hospital in Shahibaug.

According to Ahmedabad crime branch, Togadia, 62, who had mysteriously gone missing in the morning, was found in a semi conscious state near Kotarpur Water Works in the city at night by a passerby. He was taken to the hospital in a 108 ambulance.

Dr Roopkumar Agrawal, who attended to Togadia, said the VHP leader had lost consciousness due to low blood sugar. His condition is stable, he added.

The police said they would speak with him when he regained consciousness. A large number of VHP workers gathered at the hospital as word spread about his hospitalisation.

Earlier, hundreds of VHP workers gathered at Sola police station, after news spread that the VHP leader was missing and that the police may have taken him into custody. Some of them even expressed the fear of his encounter killing by the Rajasthan and Gujarat police.

As the protests grew louder, JK Bhatt, Joint Commissioner of Police (crime branch) addressed a press conference. "the Rajasthan police, along with Sola police officers, went to Togadia's residence around 10.45 in the morning to execute an arrest warrant against him in a 10-year-old case under section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the IPC. But Togadia was not at home. The Rajasthan police then went back to Sola police station, where they registered 'Togadia was not found in his residence.' They then returned to Rajasthan."

Bhatt said a police investigation revealed that at the time when police was at his residence, Togadia who has Z plus security cover was at the VHP office, from where he was seen leaving in an autorickshaw along with another man. "He didn't take any security guard with him," the police said.

His mobile phone was on switched-off mode and his location was not traceable. Bhatt categorically stated that Togadia has not been arrested. After the clarification from police, the protesters left the station. Bhatt also added that the crime branch had set up four teams to search for the missing leader.
