In a shot-in-the-arm to the BJP, the saffron party won 47 out of 75 municipalities for which elections were held. The Congress won 16 municipalities, but claimed that it won 20 as it had supported four independents. NCP won 1, BSP another, while four winners were independents.

Six municipalities did not give a clear mandate to either party and the Congress has asserted that it will gather the support needed to form the municipal board in each of them.

However, the BJP will ponder its win, as it has lost 11 seats from the last municipal elections in 2013 where it had won 59 seats.

The results for the Gujarat Municipal Poll trends were declared for 75 Nagar Palikas (municipalities), two district panchayats, 17 talukas and 1400 village panchayats.

Of 75 municipalities, BJP is in power in 47. Of the 17 taluka panchayats where elections were held, BJP is in power in 13. The two district panchayats going to the polls, Banaskantha and Kheda, are both with the BJP. Congress had won the last elections their elected members defected to the BJP, and the saffron party took control.

Two months ago, following its loss in the assembly elections, the Congress for the first time since 1995 gave a tough fight to BJP in the PM’s home state.

BJP had claimed it will win more than 150 seats, but the party has been limited to double digits, albeit one short of a century. This is a huge morale gain for the Congress.

But, then there is so much that the party still needs to do. For instance, the party failed to cash in on 22 years of anti-incumbency and massive agitations against the government.
