Students from the Schedule Caste Community in Gujarat would soon be able to polish their English language skills and get an edge in the job market with the state government deciding to install a special English language software in state-run Ideal Residential Schools.

The unique thing about the software will be that students themselves can operate it without any help from instructors to sharpen their English speaking skills.

Under the aegis of Directorate of Schedule Caste Welfare of Gujarat government, the software will be installed in all the state-run 20 Residential Schools across Gujarat meant for the students coming from SC community.

These schools provide free of cost education and hostel facilities to students of Class IX to XII of SC community. At present, more than 3200 such students are studying and living in 20 schools across the state.

According to the Deputy Director of SC Welfare P R Tank, the software will be installed in all these schools by the end of March next year.

Stressing on the need for such a software, Tank said poor English is keeping these students behind those studying in city-based schools.

"Majority of our students come from villages, where they have acquired primary education. Thus, it is natural that their communicative English is weak as compared to those who studied in city based schools. To cope up with the situation, we have decided to develop a specialised software to teach them English and make them more confident," said Tank.

To develop the software, state government is in final stages of selecting a developer, who has been asked to develop the software in such a way that the students themselves can operate it without any help from instructors. The software will be installed in the computer labs in each of these 20 schools, said Tank.

According to Tank, this new methodology will prove to be more effective then age-old system of teachers imparting education. Thus, the software will work on two modes, teacher-led and student-led.

"Instead of teaching, we will focus on the learning aspect. There will be several modules on various aspects of English language, such as lessons on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, audio and video clips, model sentences, tips to speak fluent English, jaw muscle module, quizzes, etc," said Tank.

Not just English, the software will have specialised 'soft-skill modules' to polish their personality.

"We also want to focus on improving overall personality of students and infuse confidence in them. Thus, the software will also have a specially designed soft skill modules to polish them and make them more presentable" said Tank.

The new initiative of state government is seen as an exercise to make the youth of SC community more acceptable in job market, especially when the government is running several schemes to promote SC students to take up professional courses, both in India and abroad.

"We provide loans and assistance to them for pilot training, air hostess training and for pursuing professional courses abroad, etc. Thus, it is necessary for them to have good command over English as well as a confident personality to build a career in these fields. Otherwise, they may not stand the competition" said Tank.
