Vadgam, the seat from which young Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani is contesting, saw just 61.58% voting till 4 pm in the evening on Thursday.

The figure might touch 67% at the end of polling. The percentage this year is much less as compared to 2012 assembly elections, in which the seat saw 72.27% voting. In fact, the seat also saw 68.29% voting in 2002 and 58.7% voting in 2007.

Some allegations of bogus voting were made by BJP workers from one of the booths in Chaniyana village.

It should be noted that both Mewani, who is contesting as an independent, and Vijay Chakravarti, the BJP candidate, have been battling the outsider tag in the seat.

Vadgam is a seat dominated by OBCs and Muslims and voted for Congress in the 2012 elections. This time around, the Congress did not nominate a candidate and has backed Mewani. This became evident after Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil campaigned for him. Mevani has repeatedly accused the ruling BJP of targeting him. An arrest warrant was issued against him two days after he filed his nomination in connection with his failure to respond to the court summons. A photograph of him accepting a donation from the members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Popular Front of India (PFI), had also created controversy. The PFI is under the radar of security agencies after several members of the party were allegedly found to be fighting for the IS in Syria.
