Seizing on remarks of Congress leader Charan Singh Sapra seeking apology for 2002 Gujarat riots, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Sunday said the opposition party is raising 2002 issue in 2017 for vote bank consolidation in Assembly elections in the state.

"Congress' Charan Singh said PM (Narendra) Modi must go inside Jama Masjid and apologise for 2002 riots. Entire nation knows the allegations leveled on Modi Ji by Congress backed NGO were all false and he is spotless. Yet for vote bank consolidation 2002 is being raised in 2017," Shah said.

He was referring to a Congress leader's statement that party president Sonia Gandhi apologised for 1984 anti-Sikh riots at the Golden Temple and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should also apologise for 2002 riots at Jama Masjid.

“Neither my party nor do I support the 1984 (anti-Sikh) riots. Sonia Gandhi visited Golden Temple and apologised in front of the media. Manmohan Singh also apologised in Parliament. In the last 33 years, the BJP has been adding insult to our injury. Can Narendra Modi visit the Jama Masjid and apologise for 1992 riots?” Sapra said at an event organised by a TV channel.

Alleging that the Congress laid the foundation of Gujarat election on casteism, Shah said the grand old party has been the “creator of polarisation in India.”

“Congress had laid the foundation of Gujarat election on casteism. The would-be President of Congress (Rahul Gandhi) started hopping from temple to temple. Congress has been the creator of polarisation in India,” he said.

Shah also attacked Congress-backed independent candidate from Vadgam in Banaskantha district, Jignesh Mewani, for allegedly accepting money from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Popular Front of India (PFI).

“Jignesh Mewani's pictures of accepting money from PFI has gone viral. PFI has always indulged in anti-national activities. Rahul Gandhi meets such a person who has relations with an anti-national outfit and Congress gives up its seat for him for vote bank consolidation,” the BJP president said. “Congress knew of his relations with PFI otherwise they would have given him a Congress ticket. They knew of the relations so they made him contest as an independent candidate and supported him from outside”

Again raking up Congress leader Salman Nizami, Shah said he is being used for campaigning in Gujarat “for the consolidation of vote bank.”

People of Gujarat can see through the cunning ways of Congress, Shah said.

He alleged that Mani Shankar Aiyar, former PM Manmohan Singh and former Vice President Hamid Ansari had met Pakistan's envoy in Delhi recently.

“Right before Gujarat election, without informing MEA conducting a meeting with Pak envoy... I don't know what message does it convey,” Shah asked.

First phase of Assembly elections in Gujarat for 89 seats concluded on Saturday with about 68 per cent voter turnout. The second phase of voting for the remaining 93 assembly seats  will take place on December 14.

The votes will be counted on December 18 for all 182 seats.
