Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that he aims to raise the bar of the country’s political discourse. Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Ahmedabad, Gandhi said, “Personally, I want to change the political discourse of the country; it has become very ugly and nasty.”

“The prime minister may call me names and he may use wrong language to refer to me, but like I said, I will never do that. I respect the position of the prime minister,” said Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that the statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh meeting with Pakistan minister is not acceptable. Gandhi made the statement after Prime Minister Modi had recently alleged that a "secret meeting" was held by Dr Singh and other Congress minister's with Pakistan's High Commissioner and Foreign Minister at party leader Mani Shankar Aiyar's house just before the elections.

Gandhi also said that his first job as the party’s president to strengthen its organisational structure and that he was quite confident that the Congress is winning the Assembly elections in Gujarat. “As party president, my priority will be to strengthen the party and you will see that in Gujarat," he said.

He then trained his gun on PM Modi flying a seaplane on the Sabarmati. “The PM wants to fly in a plane and give a miss to the real issues in Gujarat; these are just distractions. In Gujarat, the development has been one-sided and only a handful few has benefitted. I’ve asked him several questions for which he has no answer: Are there teachers in all the schools or not, are the doctors in all the hospitals or not, are there lapses in the Rafale deal or not. He chooses not to answer,”  Gandhi said.
