Congress attacked Election Commission of India on Thursday for not announcing the dates of Gujarat Assembly elections with Himachal Pradesh. Congress Media Cell Chairman told DNA that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Gujarat on 16th October and alleged that major announcement could be made to woo the voters. Congress alleged that it looks as if the Election Commission came under pressure and failed to announce the dates for Gujarat where Congress is pitted against BJP which is reeling under the Patidar crisis.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "PM Modi does not want to go to Gujarat as a campaigner. He wants to go there as a fake Santa Claus because promises could not be delivered there in past 22 years. The onus lies on the Election Commission to ensure a level playing field. BJP government has put pressure on EC to defer dates to suit its political ends."

Though Election Commission maintains that the reason the dates are not being announced because they were requested by the Gujarat government not to announce the dates as relief work was being carried out in six to seven districts of Gujarat and with the announcement of dates, code of conduct would come into effect hampering the relief work. Congress on the other hand feels that Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s campaign in Gujarat has had a desired result and it is for this reason BJP wants to announce sops first before going into the election mode.

During 2013, assembly elections were declared on a single date, unlike this time where Election Commission only said that polling in Gujarat will take place before 18th of December. As per Election Commission’s announcement, polling in Himachal Pradesh will take place on 9th of December and counting will take place on 18th of December.
