To attack the development model of Gujarat, the AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi, who is touring the state ahead of the election, has brought forward the ‘Gehlot’ model of Rajasthan. Applauding Rajasthan’s free medical scheme launched by ex-chief minister Ashok Gehlot, the Gandhi scion has promised that the Congress government when formed in Gujarat will provide free medical facilities to the people on the lines of Rajasthan scheme.

Gandhi spoke about this when Gehlot, who is incharge of Gujarat, was sharing stage with him at a program ‘Sanvad’ in Jamnagar. “Congress government in Rajasthan had launched the scheme to provide free medicine and free treatment to people. “When the Congress government will return to power in Gujarat we will implement it and people do not need to pay for health services. In Karnataka, the Congress is implementing it as well,” said Gandhi.

While referring Gehlot’s scheme, the AICC vice president also made a scathing attack on BJP governments which he blamed for privatising health and education institutions, terming the move as anti-poor. “Be it school, university or hospital, they (the BJP governments) have privatised all. If you are rich then you can get treatment easily but it’s not for poor,” Gandhi said, underlining the priority of the party.

The assembly elections are due in December and Gandhi is on a three-day tour of the politically important Saurashtra region, dominated by the Patels, who are upset with the BJP government for turning down their demand for reservation. These three days are crucial for Gehlot who has to perform and prove his mettle while making Gandhi’s rallies successful. The party’s victory in Gujarat will also decide his role in Rajasthan where the assembly elections are slated to be held by the end of 2018.
