Gujarat, which has witnessed a boom in private coaching centres over a period of time, has no system in place to monitor or regulate such institutes, an RTI query has revealed.

"Gujarat Government has admitted that there's neither a monitoring system nor any repository of information regarding the number of private coaching classes," said Rohit Prajapati and Trupti Shah who run city-based 'Documentation and Study Centre for Action'.

Claiming that the response from government was elicited through their RTI application, the duo said the standard of school and college education was on decline in the state.

The mushrooming of private institutes underpins "poor quality" of education in Gujarat, they said.

"Gujarat Education Policy has converted schools and colleges from places of education to business ventures," they said, adding running private coaching and tuition classes has become a lucrative trade.
