Gudi Padwa is the festival that augments the new year and is celebrated on the first day of the Indian month of Chaitra. The New Year begins with the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar, on March 28 this year, and on this day family members get together to celebrate.

Spiritual significance of Gudi Padwa

In Maharashtra, it’s a celebration of the victory march of Shivaji Maharaja, the fiery Maratha leader. The warrior king had a kingdom that spread across the entire part of western India and the reason people celebrate the ‘gudi’, a cloth which flies like a flag as a sign of victory. Another reason is that on this day, Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya along with his consort Sita and brother Lakshama after defeating demon King Ravana in Lanka.

It’s also a harvest festival, which shows the Rabi crop has ended for this season. Another reason why this festival is celebrated is because it’s believed that Lord Brahma created the world on this day. It’s also believed that Lord Vishnu took the Matsya (fish) avatar on this day.

Similar to a flag, a gudi is a wooden stick covered with a piece of bright red or yellow-coloured cloth. Then a kalash made of silver, copper or bronze is placed upside down on one end of the stick and a dash of vermilion is placed  on its outer surface. It is believed that good wins over evil and is an auspicious day for all.

Mantra

One of the popular mantras for this day: ‘O Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu! Please enable me to absorb the Principle of Creation and the Fire Principle present in the atmosphere. Let the Divine consciousness present in these principles be constantly preserved. Let the energy thus received, be used for my spiritual practice.’
