The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Goods and Service Tax (GST) Council officer Monish Malhotra and his close aide Manas Patra, a private tax consultant, in an alleged corruption case in the national Capital.

This the first instance of a GST Council official being arrested by the central investigating agency. Malhotra, the superintendent, and Patra, the alleged middleman, were arrested by the CBI on Wednesday evening.

The CBI said that Malhotra was recently posted in the GST Council headquarters at Jeevan Bharti Building in Delhi. "Patra worked as a conduit for Malhotra and the officers involved. Some other officers are also under the scanner," the CBI said.

A case was registered under various sections of Prevention of Corruption Act on the allegations that Malhotra indulged in extending undue favours to private parties and businessmen by not taking action against them in lieu of periodical illegal gratification. It also states that Patra used to contact the private parties on behalf of Malhotra and used to collect bribe money.

"We laid a trap and caught both the accused when Patra handed over Rs 10,000 to Malhotra and he accepted the same," CBI said. Searches were conducted at the premises of both the accused including his office and residence. Rs 7 lakh in cash was recovered during the search.

"Malhotra while working as Superintendent, Range-36, Central Excise, Nehru Place, had been indulged into corrupt practices of extending undue favours to private parties or businessmen," the FIR stated.

The FIR further pointed that in order to camouflage the further receipt of these amounts by the public servant the said amounts were deposited by Patra in his own account number and thereafter, all these amounts of illegal gratification were further transferred to the bank accounts of Shobhna Malhotra wife of Monish Malhotra and Aiyushj Malhotra daughter of Malhotra.

"Patra, on the instructions of Malhotra, has collected several amounts of illegal gratification from many private parties in the last few days," it said.
