The Congress accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using probe agencies to carry out a smear campaign against opposition leaders and claimed that Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the AgustaWestland chopper scandal, has been forced to frame UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in return for exoneration from any charges.

Ahead of bringing no-confidence motion against NDA government in Parliament, the Congress launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of 'blind vendetta' against opposition party in AgustaWestland case.

The Congress reacted a day after the Enforcement Directorate filed a supplementary charge sheet in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper bribery scam against former Air Force Chief S P Tyagi, his two cousins, lawyer Gautam Khaitan, two Italian middlemen and Finmeccanica. The charge sheet will be taken up for consideration on July 20.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that 'mudslinging', 'muckraking' and 'hatchet job' is being enacted by Modi government to smear opposition leaders.

Michel, a British national, was detained in Dubai around a month ago. He is accused of handling and routing over 60 million euros for AgustaWestland kickbacks. Investigators say that he made about 300 trips to India, the last in 2013. Congress said that Rosemary Patrizi Dos Anjos, advocate for Michel and his sister, Sasha Ozemen have brought out that Central government and its agencies were forcing "Michel to sign a false confessional statement accusing UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in return for complete exoneration from any charge whatsoever in the Agusta Westland case".

Even as Christian Michel has been detained in Dubai, Congress stated the agencies have failed to produce any evidence in the courts in Dubai so far and are merely involved in hatching a conspiracy against leaders of opposition and using Michel as a tool for the purpose.

Never before in the history of India has a Prime Minister been found complicit in gaining 'false evidence' against opposition leaders to seek revenge, Surjewala said.

He then explained that UPA-Congress government had cancelled the contract for supply of 12 helicopters for a total cost of Rs 3,546 crore in February 2013 and proceeded to handover the case to the CBI on February 12, 2013.

To protect national interest, their government had proceeded to encase the securities and bank guarantees (and recovered an amount of Rs 2,068 crore against original payment of Rs 1,620 crore. The government had also confiscated three helicopters worth Rs 886.50 crore as per contract value.

He claimed that their government had effectively recovered nearly Rs 3000 core. Further he also claimed that Congress government also initiated the black listing of AgustaWestland and its parent company Finmeccanica, which culminated into black listing on July 3, 2014.
