'Govt took immediate steps after Nepal earthquake', says Rajnath in Lok Sabha

Assuring the government's help for everyone during the hour of crisis, Rajnath said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with 11-12 chief ministers immediately after the quake struck.

Detailing the Centre's response in the wake of the devastating Nepal earthquake, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said the government took immediate steps to ensure rescue and relief in the aftermath of the tragedy.

"Just five minutes after the earthquake, I was with the Prime Minister. He called and said there will be a meeting at 3 pm. I am happy that he knew of the incident before me and took swift action," Rajnath said in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Assuring the government's help for everyone during the hour of crisis, Rajnath said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with 11-12 chief ministers immediately after the quake struck.

"People in both Nepal and India who have been affected will be helped by our government. PM spoke with 11-12 chief ministers immediately after the quake," said the Home Minister.

"We decided that the states bordering Nepal should send buses for evacuation. Prime Minister has also given a nod for priority visa for those who want to evacuate," he added.

Rajnath further said that four NDRF teams have been sent to Bihar and one NDRF team is operating in UP and the Prime Minister is personally monitoring the situation.

"We are in constant touch with state governments and have assured all help to them," he said.

The death toll due to the earthquake has risen to over 3,200 in Nepal. The calamity is one of the worst in over 80 years of Nepal's history, killing over 3,200 people.

Thousands in the country are forced to spend the nights outside, setting up makeshift tents, sitting around campfires and eating food provided by volunteers.
