The Centre has planned to turn the tables on the Opposition — especially the Congress that has been relentless in its attack over a host of issues — by going all out to remind the people of the Congress' rule during the 1975-1977 Emergency period.

The Narendra Modi government has been taking heat from the Opposition over several issues, including the recent Dalit unrest in UP's Saharanpur and the ongoing farmers' protests in MP's Mandsaur.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has written to his ministerial colleagues, asking them to make themselves available on the requests of the BJP state units to attend programmes organised for an 'Anti-Emergency Day' to be observed on June 25 and June 26.

Talking about the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 26, 1975, Naidu called it a "black day in the constitutional democracy of Independent India." "We, a democratic and national party, observe the day to reinforce our firm commitment against subversion of democratic values," the letter dated June 14 states. He has said in the letter that the event will be organised this year too on June 25 and June 26 to demonstrate how "we value the real democracy and how sturdily we stand for people's rights."

Aside exhorting his colleagues to participate in the programmes, the minister has also sought their active participation for country-wide events to be organised by the government to mark International Yoga Day on June 21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will most likely be in Lucknow for Yoga Day celebrations.

In his letter, Naidu has asked all ministers to reach their designated location by the night of June 20, as the programmes would start early next morning.

He has also said that while the programmes will be officially organised by the Ministry of AYUSH across the country, the ministers can also consider attending programmes organised by the BJP's state units.

Last year, 68 Union ministers participated in country-wide celebrations.

Union ministers are also likely to travel across the country next month and meet traders' bodies and industry stakeholders to speak about the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime that is set to roll out on July 1.
