The Centre has made fitness a top priority for police forces across the country. In a recent directive, the Ministry of Home Affairs asked all the states and union territories to routinely examine the health of the entire police crops annually, to ensure efficient policing.

In its letter, the ministry said that police personnel, working long hours under stress, suffer health issues and lifestyle diseases, and this sub-optimal state of affairs has an adverse effect on their efficacy as well as policing.

So the states and UTs have been directed to "give utmost importance to maintain physical fitness of their police personnel, which has a direct bearing on their ability to perform duties".

Strength of all the state police is 2,464,484, which means there is one policeman per 518 people. The force is spread across 15,579 stations and 9,087 police outposts across the country.

The ministry cites the annual health audit for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), known as SHAPE, under which personnel are checked for psychological and physical ailments.

"The audit exercise has played a key role in ensuring good health of the CAPF personnel. It will be of immense use to maintain requisite fitness and agility of police if states and union territories adopt a similar regime."
