Govt on mission to conserve Bapu's legacy

In a significant move to preserve the history of Mahatma Gandhi, Government of India has set up ‘Gandhi Heritage Site Mission’ (GHSM) on Monday. The mission has been set up with aim to identify, collate and assess the information and materials related to Mahatma Gandhi and ensure its conservation and management.

The prime minister has given the approval to mission that will be chaired by historian and litterateur Shailesh Bandhopadhyay.

The member of mission include Gandhian Tridip Suhrud, environmentalist and Trustee of Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust, heritage and conservation architect Ranesh Ray, vice-chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapeeth Sudarshan Iyengar, historian and professor at Delhi University Shahid Amin, Editor of Gandhian journal Gandhi Marg Anupam Mishra and Computer and Electronics scientist from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore Venu Madhav Govindu.

The mission has been set up after the recommendation of chairman of panel on Gandhi Heritage Site Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who had identified the sites across the country and abroad, which are connected with Gandhi.

The panel headed by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is also grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has identified 39 core sites in India, South Africa and Engled, where Gandhi had spent significant time of his life.

Apart from this there are over 2,000 sites, which had been visited by Mahatma Gandhi.
