Despite knowing well that a debate on the finance Bill is not going to be of much consequence, the Opposition launched a spirited attack on the government in the Upper House for “undermining the constitution and democracy” by surreptitiously using the money-Bill route to bring in various amendments not under its purview.

Initiating the discussion, Congress leader Kapil Sibal tore into the government by accusing it of trying to promote crony capitalism, creating fear by giving “unbridled power” to taxmen, trying to snoop into citizens’ privacy through increased use of Aadhaar and dismantling of established traditions ever since the Constitution came into being through the provisions of the finance Bill.

Incidentally, the treasury benches did not object much when Opposition members, arguing about the implications of the finance Bill, asked for the time of the discussion to be increased from three to eight hours. Acknowledging the seriousness, the deputy chairman agreed to five hours.  Questioning the move to use Aadhaar for filing tax returns, Sibal said that even the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister had raised concerns over the use of the cards when the BJP was in opposition.
