A special investigation team (SIT) headed by former chief secretary Johny Joseph will formally launch probe into the allegations of corruption and irregularities against IAS officer Radheshyam Mopalwar on Tuesday. SIT will hold its maiden meeting with full quorum on Tuesday after the government on Monday issued a notification with regard to the appointment of additional commissioner (security) RD Shinde as the SIT's member.

The notification was necessary after the city police commissioner had declined to commit the services of additional commissioner Pravin Padwal as the member due to work pressure. A third member is deputy commissioner Parag Manere. DNA had first reported about Padwal's absence from the SIT.

After uproar in the legislature, the government through its notification issued on August 29, had set up Joseph led SIT with a mandate to complete inquiry by September 30. However, SIT could not hold formal meeting due to the city commissioner's reluctance to spare Padwal as its member.

Officer from the SIT secretariat told DNA,'' SIT with full quorum will meet on Tuesday and kickstart probe. As the notification was issued today, SIT is expected to complete its job by October 25 instead of September 30.'' However, he clarified that the government will take a call on extending the SIT's time limit to complete its probe.

SIT will assess the authenticity of CD/audio clip in which Mopalwar was purportedly heard fixing a massive land deal. Besides, SIT will examine whether or not there was editing, splicing and recording of fake voice by voice modulation. SIT will hold inquiry into whether the corruption charges against Mopalwar are linked to his role as the vice chairman and managing director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) which has been a nodal agency for the Rs 46,000 crore Mumbai Nagpur super communication expressway.

Besides, SIT will also probe Mopalwar's status with regard to Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry against multi crore stamp paper scams and his alleged connection.

Mopalwar, who has been sent on leave, will be asked to submit necessary documents and argue his case.
