The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has waived off the requirement of Aadhaar card for students in its schools in foreign countries. It has asked them to instead upload their passport number for registration.

The CBSE has schools in 25 foreign countries like Ethiopia, Bahrain, Japan, Indonesia, Afghanistan and others.

In September last year, the Board had sent a communication to all the schools affiliated to it making Aadhaar compulsory for all students for further years. In response to the communication, the Board received various queries from the schools located in foreign countries expressing their inability to provide Aadhaar number to students owing to the fact that the schools are located in foreign land.

“The CBSE-affiliated schools located in foreign countries, expressed their inability to provide Aadhaar number to their students owing to the fact that schools are on foreign land and majority of the students do not have Aadhaar cards. In view of this, the board has decided to waive off the requirement of Aadhaar number, for registration, in respect of students of foreign schools,” the board said in an official statement.

“Alternately, the foreign candidates/schools may use the passport number in place of Aadhaar number while submitting the application of candidates for online registration of Classes 9 and 11, and the list of candidates for Classes 10 and 12,” it added.

This information may be disseminated to all the students, parents and other stakeholders for their ready reference, it said. The Board has also asked its schools to keep themselves abreast with the latest information of the CBSE and examination bye-laws.

The CBSE has been actively participating in taking the central government’s mission of Aadhaar implementation. The board recently asked its schools to set up Aadhaar enrolment centres and encourage students who do not have an Aadhaar number to get enroled.

The Board has partnered with Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as registrar to collect demographic and biometric data of residents directly, or through enrolment agencies.

However, the Board has not mandated the schools to set up the centres, and asked the schools volunteering to do so to sign an MoU with either the Board or UIDAI.
