A grim faced government continued to explore options on Wednesday to give a befitting reply to Pakistan after the Uri attack in which 18 Army personnel were martyred. Pakistan-based militants had orchestrated an audacious attack at Army Brigade headquarters in Uri on Sunday.

Several meetings at top levels were held, including the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), to weigh the pros and cons of options that India could take in retaliation to the Uri terror strike.

Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi gave a halfhour long presentation to the CCS about the preparedness of the troops and the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir that continues to reel under civilian unrest since Hizbul commander Burhan Wani's encounter killing.

The presentation was followed by a back to back two-hour-long meeting between union home minister Rajnath Singh and Mehrishi following which Rajnath met Prime Minister Modi to brief him about the overall security situation on India's western border.

Mehrishi had gone to Srinagar on Tuesday to take stock of the security grid and discuss the possible implications on the Valley, if the Indian Army would undertake an operation to avenge the Uri incident. To keep the outbreak of another bout of violence at bay, Mehrishi is understood to have discussed the possibility of a massive crackdown on terrorists and militants who have infiltrated the area, with the Jammu and Kashmir state government and top security officials.

Collated intelligence inputs estimate that 200-220 terrorists have infiltrated into the Valley from across the border since January this year. The majority of them managed to infiltrate when the security grid preparedness along the Line of Control (LoC) was at its lowest and counter insurgency operations had virtually come to a standstill because of the massive unrest across the Valley.

Sources in the security establishment said that there is still no clarity on what kind of option the Indian Army could use against Pakistan to satiate public sentiment. Units in the government that are monitoring social media round the clock said that they have been witnessing strong negative sentiments against Prime Minister Modi and the government since the Uri attack.

These sources added that though they don't know what option the government may choose to use against Pakistan, the best available option could be surgical strikes on Pakistani Army posts by the highly trained Border Action Team (BAT).
