Congress on Friday accused the government of "concealing the truth" a day after it claimed that India and US successfully resolved their differences relating to public stock holding for food security purposes in WTO, which takes care of the nation's interests.

"The government's claim of having reached an agreement with the US to resolve the impasse in the WTO with the US accepting India's position for "peace clause" to be permanent untill a solution is reached on public stock holding of foodgrains is a deliberate attempt to mislead the people. "The government is guilty of concealing the truth, its claim of victory is hollow and surprising," former Commerce Minister and spokesperson of Congress Anand Sharma said.

Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had on Thursday said that India and the US successfully resolved their differences relating to the issue of public stock holding for food security purposes in WTO in a manner "that addresses our concerns." "This will end the impasse at the WTO and also open the way for implementation of the trade facilitation agreement (TFA)," she had said. Rebutting the claims, Sharma alleged that an impression has been created by the BJP-led government that it was India's principled position to protect its right to food security which forced India to take a tough stance.

"This is nothing but one-upmanship and a claim which is orchestrated for political gains and misleading. The issue of public stockholding for food security was actually forced by India at Bali Ministerial meeting and the same were secured and protected. The Commerce Minister's statement attributing that the agreement reached at Bali Ministerial Meeting was a temporary peace clause is factually incorrect and political dishonesty," the Congress leader said.
