The government finally cleared the names of five BJP veterans bearing the stamp of strong RSS roots as governors of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Nagaland on Monday.

The governor's posts in these states had fallen vacant after the resignations of BL Joshi (Uttar Pradesh), Shekhar Dutt (Chhattisgarh), MK Narayanan (West Bengal) and Ashwani Kumar (Nagaland) and the transfer of Kamala Beniwal from Gujarat to Mizoram.

Former petroleum minister during NDA regime, Ram Naik (80), who is also credited for decontrolling LPG cylinders, will take charge as governor of Uttar Pradesh.

Veteran BJP leader from Punjab, 85 years old Balramji Dass Tandon, who won 6 elections in the state assembly and also served as deputy chief minister, will be Chhattisgarh governor.

Keshari Nath Tripathi (79), three times speaker of Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly and former president of Uttar Pradesh state unit of the BJP, has been appointed as governor of West Bengal.

Former member of Rajya Sabha Om Prakash Kohli who earlier served as president of Delhi University Teacher's Association (DUTA) and also as the president of BJP's student's wing, the ABVP has been appointed as new governor of Gujarat.

Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, a member of the working group on the north eastern region of the BJP, has been made governor of Nagaland. This may come as temporary relief to Sheila Dikshit whose name was being considered for transfer as governor of the Nagaland by the government.

An official communique from Rashtrapati Bhawan said that the appointments of Naik, Tandon, Tripathi and Kohli "will take effect from the dates (they) assume charge of their offices."

Further, the president has also appointed Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, to discharge the functions of the governor of Tripura, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the governor of Tripura are made.

Some of the governors are expected to take oath after the return of prime minister Narendra Modi from BRICS Summit in Brazil by the end of the week.
