After registration of FIRs against nine accused in Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College tragedy in which 31 children had died allegedly due to short supply of oxygen on August 10 and 11, a team of the Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday arrested former Principal Dr Rajeev Mishra and his wife Purnima Shukla from Kanpur.

Dr Rajeev Mishra and his wife are the main accused in the BRD case.

The doctor couple was on the run and had sought shelter at the residence of a prominent lawyer of Kanpur to seek legal help for quashing of cases against them.

A STF surveillance team was keeping a tab on their movements through mobile locations. The team tracked the couple in Kanpur and arrested them from the residence.

The SSP Gorakhpur Anirudh Satyarth Pankaj confirmed the arrest and said that a team of the Gorakhpur has been sent to Kanpur to bring the main accused and his wife to Gorakhpur for interrogation. “We appeal all other accused to surrender and help the police carry out its investigation or else they will also meet the same fate,” warned the SSP.

The Gorakhpur Police had conducted a raid on late Monday night at the residence of Dr Kafeel Ahmed Khan only to find that he too was absconding.

Police searched his residence and nursing home run by his wife and collected several documents to prove charges of Khan indulging in private practice.

On the direction of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Lucknow Police had lodged FIRs against nine accused including Dr Rajeev Mishra, his wife Dr Purnima Shukla, Head AES Ward Dr Kafeel Ahmed Khan, Head Anaesthesia, Dr Satish Kumar, Owner of Pushpa Sales Maneesh Bhandari, Chief Pharmacist Gajanand Jaiswal, Account department clerks Udai Pratap Sharma, Sanjay Kumar and Sudhir Kumar.

FIRs were lodged under Sections 120-B, 308 and 420 on the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 7/13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 15 of the Indian Medical Council Act.
