Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has criticised Yogi Adityanath led BJP government in the state for 'doing nothing' to save the lives of children who have died in BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur.

"Maximum children who died in Gorakhpur were Hindus, tell us what help you have extended to their families?,"asked Akhilesh Yadav.

Samajwadi Party President made the remarks while addressing a public meeting 'Shahi Mela 2017' in Azamgarh.

"When we helped the poor, you used to identify whether they were Hindus or Muslims. We were accused of helping Muslims more, but now we tell you that most of the dead are Hindus at Gorakhpur, tell us what help you have extended to them? (Hum jab madad karte the to aap dekhte the ki Hindu hai ya Muslim hai, humpe aarop lagate the ki Hindu ki kam madad karte ho ,muslim ki jyada, hum aapse kahte hai ki gorakhpur me Hindu jyada mare hai, batao aapne kitno ki madad ki)," asked Akhilesh Yadav attacking Yogi Adityanath.

Akhilesh also accused the BJP government in the state of just 'making promises' and actually doing nothing to bring about a change in the situation. "Children are still losing their lives in Gorakhpur. But, instead of helping the Gorakhpur people, this government is promising action only," he said.

A total of 290 children died at Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur in August, 213 of them in the neonatal ICU and 77 in the encephalitis ward, principal P.K. Singh said.

There have been 1,250 deaths since January this year at the hospital, especially in encephalitis, infant and children’s wards, he said.

Giving a break-up of the casualties at the hospital, Singh said 37 children have died on 27 and 28 August, of whom 26 died in the neonatal ICU (NICU) and 11 in encephalitis ward.
