Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi slammed the Uttar Pradesh government and said that it was clear that oxygen supply shortage led to the deaths of children at Gorakhpur hospital.

Talking to media after his visit, he said that Gorakhpur incident was a national tragedy and was an example of real status of healthcare sector in India.

He said that instead of covering up, the government must act and do something.

Coming down heavily on the Central government, the Congress leader said that, “ (PM) Modiji talks of new India. We don’t want that. We want an India where children get proper medical facilities and instead of dying due to shortage of oxygen return home hail and hearty. It’s a national tragedy and not restricted to Uttar Pradesh only. Negligence and poor medical facilities at BRD Medical College is a reflection of poor health system across country under the resent regime.”

Gandhi also said that he had visited the hospital on earlier occasions too and and warned PM Modi about the poor conditions at the hospital.
“When I had come to the hospital earlier, I had drawn attention of the Prime Minister on lack of proper medical facilities. I had also requested him to sanction funds to the BRD Medical College. But no action was taken then by the PM,” he alleged.

On Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s sarcastic ‘picinic spot’ remark, Rahul trained the gun on Yogi saying that ‘it was a government-made tragedy’. “Majority of parents told me that their infants died due to oxygen short supply. It’s a government-made tragedy. Instead of shielding culprits, Chief Minister should initiate action against guilty and improve health care in the state,” he charged.

The Congress scion's remarks come hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chided him for his visit to the hospital and said that Gorakhpur was not a 'picnic spot'.
Adityanath, who launched a cleanliness campaign in the district to tackle the deadly encephalitis outbreak in the wake of death of 71 children at the BRD hospital here, also hit out at his predecessor and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

"I feel that the shehzada sitting in Lucknow ..Yuvraj sitting in Delhi will not know the importance of this cleanliness campaign. They will come here to make it a picnic spot, we cannot permit it," the chief minister said taking a jibe at Gandhi, hours before the Congress leader's visit to Gorakhpur to meet the families of the victims.

"If someone gives an open challenge to the self-respect of the people of Gorakhpur and eastern UP ...They will themselves come forward to fight such dreaded diseases through their awareness," Adityanath stressed, launching the 'Swachch Uttar Pradesh - Swasthya Uttar Pradesh campaign'.

Hitting back at the chief minister for his barb, the Congress said it only reflects the pettiness and panic that Rahul Gandhi's visit will ensure justice to the victims.
