NEW DELHI: The Justice UC Banerjee Committee has rejected the Narendra Modi government’s theory of a conspiracy behind the fire in the Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002, which sparked widespread riots in Gujarat. The committee has concluded that the fire was an accident.

The retired Supreme Court justice was appointed by the railway ministry in 2004 to investigate the cause of the fire in the train. He submitted his final report to Railway Board Chairman JP Batra on Friday.

The Modi government has maintained that the train was attacked because it was carrying karsewaks returning from Ayodhya. The incident set off riots in several parts of Gujarat, which claimed more than 1,000 lives.

The Banerjee Committee rejected the state police’s claim that Muslims living in the Signal Falia locality near Godhra station had locked the doors of compartment S-6, which was gutted in the fire, from outside. “This never happened,” Banerjee told DNA.

Reacting to the findings, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Modi’s lie has been laid to rest. We believe it is yet another reason for his resignation.”
